In Praise of God

Expressing our faith through prayers of  praise and adoration

"The Lord is my strength and my defence; he has become my salvation. He is my God, and I will praise him, my father’s God, and I will exalt him" (Exodus 15:2)

" Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ." (Ephesians 1:3)

" Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead." (1 Peter 1:3)

"  The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise him." (Psalm 28:7)

" Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God." (Romans 15:7)

Loving God, we praise you,
not only when the sun
is shining, but when rain
seems endless. For just
as a seed needs both sun
and rain if it is to grow,
so faith becomes stronger,
lives become more fruitful,
if we root them in the rich
and solid earth of your love.

For the love you have shown us
as sometimes reluctant disciples,
your patience in being with us
when we decide to go our way,
your hand that is there for us
as we stumble or are anxious,
your gentle whisper reminding us
that you will never let us go,
for all of this and more besides
what can we do but offer you
the worship of our hearts and lives.

A song of praise be on my heart
from the moment I am woken,
and later, lying down to rest
may that song remain unbroken

Light of light,
Lord of Lords,
God of this world
and the next,
We give you thanks
for the promise of this day,
We give you thanks
for the challenge of this day,
We give you thanks
for the blessings of this day.
Light of light,
Lord of Lords,
God of this world
and the next,
We give you thanks

You spoke
And a universe
Burst into existence.
You breathed
And an ocean
Broke against shore.
You laughed
And a wild goose
Flew across the horizon.
You sang
And a love song
Was played for the world.

This world is yours, planned in eternity,
created in a moment of sheer exuberance,
permeated with love,
well made.

This place is yours, in its simplicity,
blue sky and countryside, pure creativity,
painted with care,
well made.

This day is yours, pure generosity,
given for moments of gentle reflection,
in the bustle of a day,
well made.

This moment is yours in its entirety,
a drop of time in an ocean of history,
gifted with joy,
well made.

There is glory
within each sunrise, Lord,
a warm effusion of praise
reaching upwards and out,
connecting earth
with heaven,
creator
with created,
Shafts of sunlight,
arms outstretched in worship
encourage participation
from those who watch
and wonder,
at the beauty of it all

Thank you Lord God for the opportunity of worship,
for the freedom to be amongst your family
meeting together in your house,
and in the warmth of your embrace

Thank you that in worship we can put aside,
the uncertainties of this world and rest
upon the certainties of the Kingdom,
for your promises are not changeable
as those of a politician might be,
but immovable and eternal

Thank you that we can bring to your feet
all the hurts and fears that trouble us,
and leave them there,
knowing that your strength and assurance
are all that we require

Thank you that as we draw near in worship,
we are transported
from a world of concerns and fears,
to a place where we can be at peace in your presence,
find healing, wholeness and refreshment.
Thank you Lord God for the opportunity of worship

Creator of all,
Sustainer of all,
Saviour of all,
Your glory and majesty
are beyond our understanding,
Your power too awesome to behold.
And yet your love enfolds us as a gentle breeze.
Saviour of all ,
Sustainer of all,
Creator of all,
We bless your holy name

How can we praise you
In life’s ordinary moments,
bus, car or train,
pedestrian moments,
at home and employment,
with all those distractions.
How can we praise you?

How can we praise you
when time is so precious,
appointments and targets
distracting our focus,
muddying waters,
made clean for your purpose.
How can we praise you?

How can we praise you?
Through all of our actions,
a smile and a greeting,
a shoulder to lean on,
a word in due season,
love and compassion,
in all situations

Yours, Lord is the Glory,
in everything I see,
a country scene,
mountain stream,
sunrise, sunset, rain and snow.
Yours, Lord is the Glory,
wherever I might go.

Yours, Lord is the Glory,
in everything I hear,
a roaring sea,
bumblebee,
laughter, loving, a tender poem.
Yours, Lord is the Glory,
wherever I might go.

Yours, Lord is the Glory,
in everything I feel,
a special place,
warm embrace,
accepted, helped to become whole.

Jesus
I am not a poet
or musician,
but
I have written
a song of praise
in my heart.
And in the quietness
of this moment
I shall share it with you,
in the certain knowledge
that any imperfections
will be made perfect,
in the simple act
of opening my heart
and singing

Creator God,
from the moment your spirit
hovered over the waters of this earth,
we were part of a vision
held lovingly within your heart.
From the moment you spoke
and separated darkness from light,
you created space
where we might one day walk.
From the moment your joy
spilled out into green and living things,
your beauty was revealed
for us to taste and see.
Creator God,
for this world,
beauty and majesty,
passion and artistry,
a green and pleasant place,
we praise your mighty name.

You are the God who formed us,
The God who knows us,
The God who loves us,
The God who leads us,
The God who feeds us,
The God who blesses us,
The beginning and end
of all that we are,
and hope to be.
Worthy of our praise.

Creator God, we glimpse your beauty
in setting sun, mountain top, eagle's wing.
We sense your power in thunder crash,
lightning flash and ocean's roar.
Creator God we praise you

Precious Jesus, we see your love
stretched out upon a cruel cross.
We stand in awe at your sacrifice,
pure love poured out for humankind.
Precious Jesus we praise you

Holy Spirit, we see your power
in lives transformed, hearts on fire.
We listen for your still, small voice,
comforting, guiding, calling.
Holy Spirit we praise you

God, creator,
Artist supreme,
The potter who forms us,
The father who keeps us,
The mother who holds us,
The word who sustains us,
The love who will not let us go,
We offer you our sacrifice of praise.

Jesus, Messiah,
Saviour and friend,
The rabbi who teaches us,
The prophet who stirs us,
The healer who touches us,
The One who dies for us,
The love who will not let us go,
We offer you our sacrifice of praise.

Spirit, power,
Breath of Life,
The guide who prompts us,
The truth who inspires us,
The fire who empowers us,
The spirit who enables us,
The love who will not let us go,
We offer you our sacrifice of praise.

You are the God who formed us,
We praise your glorious name.
You are the God who loves us,
We praise your glorious name.
You are the God who forgives us,
We praise your glorious name.
You are the God who saves us,
We praise your glorious name.
You are the God who calls us,
We praise your glorious name.
You are the God who empowers us,
We praise your glorious name.
You are the God who sends us,
We praise your glorious name.

Creator of all things,
Alpha and Omega,
Beginning and End,
Father, Shepherd, Servant,
Brother, Priest and King.
Whose love poured out
mends broken hearts.
Whose wounded hands
reach out to all.
Whose Spirit waits
to enter in.
You are the everything
that we desire.
Be with us now.
Bless us that we might be
a blessing to others.
AMEN

By the word of our Lord the heavens were made.
By the spirit of our Lord was life begun.
By the wisdom of our Lord his laws were laid.
By the love of our Lord was born his Son.
By the grace of our Lord mankind was saved.
By the power of our Lord the victory was won.

The majesty of God
Cannot be measured
By human instruments,
Cannot be constrained
Within human boundaries,
Cannot be contained
Within human vessels,
Cannot be explained
By human thought,
Cannot be dismissed
By argument or reason.
The majesty of God
Is beyond human comprehension.
Yet can be known,
And touched,
Understood ,
And received,
In the simple act
Of worship

God of majesty and power,
Who spoke and this world was,
Who breathed and this world lived,
Who counts the hairs upon our head,
Who sees our thoughts and reads our hearts,
Who loves us more than we deserve,
How can we not bring today,
Our sacrifice of praise?
For in the child at Bethlehem
Lies the promise of intimacy
With a Saviour who would die even for me,
And the promise of an eternity
In which to praise you more each day.
God of promise we praise your name, Amen

Rejoice in the Lord always!
Shout out his name!
For God is with us,
Our God is with us,
The God of our salvation,
In whom alone we trust.

Rejoice in the Lord always!
Shout out his name!
For God is our Father,
He draws us home,
By streams of living water,
Where we shall thirst no more.

Rejoice in the Lord always!
Shout out his name!
He knows our thoughts,
Understands our hearts,
And enables us to become
The people we were meant to be. Amen

From the very beginning was
Your Word,
Which spoke this world into being,
Your Word,
Which thunders from the skies,
Your Word,
Which flows like mountain streams,
Your Word,
Which whispers in morning breeze,
Your Word,
Revealed through kings and prophets,
Your Word,
Revealed through Angels' praise,
Your Word,
Revealed in humble service,
Your Word,
Revealed through a tiny child,
Your Word,
Alive from the beginning of all things,
And to eternity.

For the joy of your presence
Changing and renewing us
Day by day,
We offer you our praise.
For the blessing you bring us,
The outpouring of your love
Day by day,
We offer you our praise.
For peace beyond understanding,
Blesséd assurance
Day by day
We offer you our praise.
For the Word that endures,
Teaches and challenges,
Generation to generation,
We offer you our praise.

Creator God, you who love us more than we can know,
Who chose us from the very beginning to be family ,
We praise your holy name.

Jesus Christ, Son of God, Word become flesh,
Who dwelt among us and was sacrificed for us,
We praise your holy name.

Holy Spirit, present and power in our lives,
From the moment that we first believed,
We praise your holy name.

Arise, shine, for the Light of the World has come!
Darkness covers the earth and its people,
but the radiance of God's Light
burns away its shadows,
illuminates the smallest corner,
and heralds in the start
of a new dawn,
where hearts no longer fear,
souls might be set free,
and sister shall follow brother,
nation shall follow nation,
and kings and princes bow down in awe
before the one who comes to reign.
Arise, shine, for the Light of the World has come!
Alleluia!

(based on Isaiah 43:1-7)

The God who breathed this world alive
And sustains it day by day,
Whose hands flung stars into space
And controls our destiny,
Says, “Do not be afraid, for I am with you.”
The God who filled the ocean depths,
And set tides on their way,
Who caused mountains to be raised up,
And rainbows to display,
Says, “I have called you by name, you are mine.”
The God who made the fertile earth
And seed within to sow,
Whose artistry creates butterflies
And the early morning dew,
Says, “You are precious in my sight.”

God whose love reaches to the highest heavens,
how can we keep silent?
God whose righteousness stands like the tallest mountain ,
how can we keep silent?
God whose justice is deeper than any ocean,
how can we keep silent?
God whose grace flows like a never-ending river,
how can we keep silent?
How can we not proclaim your majesty
from generation to generation?
How can we not raise the lamp of your Salvation
for all the world to see?
God whose love reaches to the highest heavens,
we praise your mighty name!

L: The heavens declare your glory
A: And the skies proclaim your handiwork

Morning sun and moon by night
The light and warmth that fuels our life
L: The heavens declare your glory
A: And the skies proclaim your handiwork

Rolling hills and mountain peak
Flowing stream and ocean deep
L: The heavens declare your glory
A: And the skies proclaim your handiwork

Thunder’s roar and breeze’s whisper
Creation sings to its Creator
L: The heavens declare your glory
A: And the skies proclaim your handiwork

This world and all within it
is part of your glorious plan,
devised and created in love
for your people to enjoy.
Such divine mystery;
Such wonder;
that you should consider
humankind so precious
and provide for our needs.
God of all, our creator,
our rock, our refuge,
our confidence and hope,
our rescuer and deliverer,
in whom we can rely,
we will praise your name today
and all days. Amen.

This earth, full of your glory,
praises your name
through unspoken words of beauty and peace,
reveals your love
through hand of stranger and gift of grace.
This earth, full of your glory,
praises your provision
through living water and food to eat,
reveals your Word
through daily blessings and breath of life.
This earth, full of your glory,
praises your name.

You are our fortress,
Our defender,
Protector from the storm,
The one in whom we take refuge.
You are our foundation,
Our solid rock
In whom our confidence rests.
You are Justice,
Compassion,
Peace
And Love.
You are
Everything .

Alpha and Omega,
Beginning and end
of all things,
Creator,
Sustainer,
Provider,
In your name we gather,
At your feet we bow.
Shield and defender,
Tower of refuge
for the weary,
Deliverer,
Redeemer,
Forgiver,
In your name we worship,
At your feet we bow.

Your Word is
truth
for victims of injustice,
light
for all who cannot see,
love
where there is hatred,
freedom
for the oppressed.
Your Word is
healing
where there is sickness,
comfort
in times of sorrow,
mercy
where there is humility,
hope
for eternity.

How can we not sing your praise
with heart and soul
and proclaim your name
throughout the world?
God of creation,
Awesome in power,
Sustainer,
Provider,
Saviour,
Father of all,
there is none like you!
How can we not declare your glory
through all that we are,
and proclaim your name
throughout this world?

Awesome One, creator of all,
the light of your glory
fills the heavens,
the breath of your Spirit
blows through the skies,
stars above stand silent witness
to the power of our God.
By your word all things were made.
By your breath are all things sustained.
By your hand we were moulded
as a potter caresses the clay,
formed from earthly dust
into an image of the divine.
By your Grace we stand here,
your creation worshiping its creator
with this our sacrifice of praise.

For the blessings of each day
we praise your holy name

For strength to endure
in the winter of strife,
shelter from storm,
protection through life.
For the blessings of each day
we praise your holy name

For footsteps to follow
a road that is true,
a love that endures
whatever we do.
For the blessings of each day
we praise your holy name

For faith to believe
hope in our heart,
your Spirit enabling
as we play our part.
For the blessings of each day
we praise your holy name

Son of God,
you love each one of us
as if there were just one of us;
those who have striven hard
to obey your commands,
those who have drifted here,
unsure of the path they trod,
those who are here simply
because of your grace,
individuals, all of us.
Son of God,
you love each one of us
as if there were just one of us,
how can we not sing your praises
for all that you have done. Amen

Like clay in the hand of a potter,
so we are to you, O Lord!
You take the imperfect
and make from it something new,
mould us into the image
of the people you would have us be.
In your hands we are restored,
perfected Lord, by you.
In your hands we are given new life,
made useful Lord, for you

You are a faithful God
even when your children fail you.
You are a forgiving God
even when we sin against you.
You are a patient God
when we wander far from you.
You are a loving God
welcoming us home to you.
How can we not offer you our praise,
how can we not offer you our lives,
in willing service
wherever you might place us. Amen

For the love you have shown us
since the moment of our birth;
the path you open up for us
to be your servants here on earth;
for the footsteps that we follow,
and your words that we shall say;
for the seed that we shall scatter
as we walk your narrow way;
and the harvest you shall gather
on that great and glorious day.
O Lord to you we raise,
this our offering of praise

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good!
His love is everlasting
and extends to all creation.

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good!
Bringing wholeness,
and peace beyond understanding.

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good!
His arms open wide
welcoming home the prodigals.

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good!
His promises are sure
His kingdom shall last forever.

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good!
